Why is traditional style barbecue important?: The world of authentic barbecue cooking is a world of rich experience, dedication, and exceptional skill. Both our movies, Inside The World of Championship Barbecue, and BBQ Secrets: The Master Guide To Extraordinary Barbecue Cookin,’ though different in purpose, tap the mother lode of traditional barbecue practices, and cooking styles. Living in Memphis at the time, barbecue was a natural subject idea, and worthy (we felt) of thoughtful investigation. Further research led us into the competition realm where we discovered a world onto its own. The passion many of these cooks display towards barbecue, competition, and each other, reflects a way of life and a form of identity. Although many of us use a barbecue for grilling—authentic barbecue cooking produces a wholely different result. Truly, it is an art form you can eat. We hope our growing body of work will better help others to learn these cooking skills, enter into competitions for those so inclined, and bring to light some of the colorful characters that dot the landscape of championship barbecue competition.
BBQ Secrets: The Master Guide To Extraordinary Barbecue Cookin’, provides in-depth barbecue demonstrations from 3 champion competition cooks, and successful BBQ restaurant owners. Drawing heavily upon their competition backgrounds—employing largely the “low and slow” approach to barbecue—these cooks offer detailed instruction that will help the backyard cook produce better results, and open many eyes to a new world of possibility. This movie recently earned two awards: the 2004 Aurora’s, Platinum: Best Of Show in the Instructional Cooking category, and the Communicator’s, Crystal Award of Excellence in the field of Communications.

Inside The World of Championship Barbecue explores the largely unseen world of barbecue competition. Filmed at the American Royal Barbecue in Kansas City, this movie follows two teams, one veteran, the other novice, through the competition process. Shot in documentary style, it serves a hybrid purpose: designed to help those new to competition learn how to succeed, and to reveal what it is really like through the mind and soul of serious barbecue contenders.

The BBQ Jones, is an upcoming feature-length documentary that looks at what fuels these barbecue competitors to battle in competition. What are their motivations to compete, and at what personal cost. We are slowly (very slowly) working on the upcoming part of it.
